Gemini in Google Meet is the AI assistant built into Google’s video calls. As of October 2026 it can take notes for you, write a short summary with action items, translate captions and even speech, and answer your private questions during the call through Ask Gemini. It comes with paid Google Workspace editions such as Business Standard and Business Plus, and with some Google AI plans for personal accounts. Hosts and admins decide whether it runs, and other people in the call see a notice when it does.

This guide is for anyone who uses Google Meet for work, volunteering or family calls and wants to know what Gemini actually does, whether their plan includes it, and how to switch it on safely.

Key points

Google describes Gemini in Google Meet as a way to automate meeting notes, translate conversations and pull out the key points so people can focus on decisions. In practice that means four everyday jobs:

  • Taking notes: “Take notes for me” writes a Google Doc with a summary, next steps and a transcript.
  • Answering questions in the call: Ask Gemini gives you a private recap, a list of decisions or a catch-up if you joined late.
  • Bridging languages: translated captions and speech translation help people who speak different languages.
  • Capturing slides: visual screenshots add presented slides and charts to the notes document.

The Google Workspace pricing page lists Gemini in Meet (“summarize, translate, and take notes”) on Business Standard and above, but not on Business Starter. If you are unsure which plan you have, check your Workspace edition with your admin before you look for the buttons.

Take notes for me and Quick notes

This is the AI note taker inside Meet. Since September 2026 the notes Doc opens on a new Quick notes tab, a one-page overview of outcomes, action items and talking points. The longer record sits on a Full notes tab, and the recap email leads with the Quick notes summary. Hosts can also set notes to start automatically in every meeting they host. Your own auto-start toggle is off by default. But on Business Standard and Plus, the admin default since late September 2026 is to take notes automatically in meetings with three or more people. Check your Meet settings and tell guests.

Ask Gemini in the meeting

Ask Gemini in Meet is a chat box for questions you would whisper to a colleague: “what did we decide about the budget?” or “what did I miss?” It reads the live captions, the Workspace files you already have access to, and public web results. From February 2026 Google added seven languages and the Meet mobile app (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish), but it handles one language per meeting. On the web, the prompt box moved to the bottom left corner in May 2026, so it is easier to find.

Translated captions and speech translation

Translated captions show subtitles in your chosen language, so each person can read along in the language they know best. Speech translation goes further and voices a translation of what people say. It reached general availability on 27 January 2026, and everyone in the call can see when someone is using it.

Visual screenshots in notes

Since August 2026, Take notes for me can capture presented slides, diagrams and charts into the notes Doc. Presenters get an on-screen alert and can stop the captures from the notes panel.

Which Workspace editions and Google AI plans include it

For business users, the short rule is: Gemini in Meet starts at Business Standard. The pricing comparison shows it on Business Standard, Business Plus and the Enterprise tiers, and missing from Business Starter. Frontline Plus and the Google AI Pro for Education add-on get some features, as the table above shows.

For personal Google accounts, the Google AI plans page says subscribers can use Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets and Meet. Google’s update posts list Google AI Pro and Ultra for Take notes for me and speech translation. Free personal accounts get standard Meet calls, and Google’s update posts do not list them for these Gemini features. Plans and features change often, so check your Workspace edition or your Google AI plan page before you count on a feature. The same goes for cost: compare the plan price on Google’s pages rather than relying on a blog post, because pricing varies by country and billing term.

How to turn on Gemini in Google Meet

The steps depend on whether you run the account or just join calls.

For meeting hosts and participants

  1. Open Google Meet in a browser and start or join a call from a Workspace account that includes Gemini.
  2. Open the Gemini or notes panel in the call and choose Take notes for me. Everyone in the call sees an indicator.
  3. To ask a question, type in the Ask Gemini box at the bottom left of the call window. On a phone, tap the Gemini icon at the top right.
  4. To turn captions on, click the captions button, then pick a translation language in the caption settings.
  5. After the call, open the notes Doc from the Calendar event or the recap email and review it before you share it.

Since February 2026, people joining a call also see a clearer notice in the “green room” (the preview screen before you enter) when notes are on, and eligible users can switch notes and transcription off before the call starts.

For Workspace admins

  1. Sign in to the Admin console and open the Meet service settings, then Gemini settings.
  2. Turn Ask Gemini in Meet on or off for the whole domain, an organizational unit or a group.
  3. Set speech translation on or off. It needs the main Gemini for Meet setting to be on.
  4. Choose the default note-taking rule. A July 2026 update added an option to take notes automatically only in meetings with three or more people. It is on by default for Business Standard and Plus and off for Enterprise plans. That default reaches users from late September 2026, and users can change it in their own Meet settings.
  5. Pick who receives the notes by default. Since January 2026 admins can set the sharing default and lock it: invited guests in your organization, all invited guests, or only the host and co-hosts.

Prompts to try with Ask Gemini

Ask Gemini works best with short, specific requests. These prompts fit common business meetings and team calls:

  • “Give me a three-point recap of the last ten minutes.”
  • “List every decision made so far and who owns each action item.”
  • “I joined late. What did I miss about the project timeline?”
  • “What questions are still open? Keep the list short.”
  • “Find the latest version of the budget Doc we are discussing.”
  • “Explain the term the speaker just used in plain words.”

A worked example: input and output shape

Picture a hypothetical volunteer committee planning a charity fair. Halfway through, a member types: “List decisions and owners so far.” A useful answer looks like this:

  • Decision: the fair moves to the community hall. Owner: the chair.
  • Decision: ticket sales open online. Owner: the treasurer.
  • Open question: who handles parking signs.

Only the person who asked sees that answer. At the end, the notes Doc holds the same points plus suggested next steps, which the chair can edit and send.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

MistakeFix
Starting notes late, then asking Gemini about the first halfTurn on Take notes for me at the start, or set it to start automatically
Asking a vague question such as “summarize”Name a time span, topic or person
Mixing two languages in one meetingAgree on one main language; Ask Gemini supports one at a time
Sending the notes without reading themCheck names, numbers and dates first
Forgetting external guestsReview the sharing setting before the call ends

Gemini in Meet is designed with visible notices, but you still need to manage consent. According to Google’s Ask Gemini announcement:

  • Your Ask Gemini questions and answers are private to you.
  • For Ask Gemini, caption data is not stored after the meeting ends, and Ask Gemini does not create a recording.
  • Everyone in the call sees a consent banner, and dial-in callers hear an announcement.
  • Hosts can switch Ask Gemini off for all participants, from the Calendar event or from Host controls during the call.
  • People who have turned off Google’s smart features cannot use Ask Gemini.
  • Gemini can get things wrong, including names, so people should review its output.

A few practical privacy measures help in any meeting. Say out loud that notes are on, even though Meet shows an indicator. Turn notes off for sensitive parts of a call, such as health, salary or legal topics. Check who receives the notes Doc, especially when guests from outside your organization attend. By default, screenshots are allowed whenever notes are on. If slides contain private data, presenters can stop visual screenshots from the notes panel, and admins can allow them only when the meeting is being recorded.

There are limits too. Ask Gemini cannot answer about parts of a meeting held before you joined unless notes were already running. At launch it was not available in breakout rooms. And automatic summaries miss tone, side conversations and what people meant but did not say.

Decision framework: is Gemini in Meet worth turning on for you?

Decision support Turn this comparison into a choice Use the workflow lens from this section to pick the right AI assistant.

Use this checklist before you rely on AI in meetings:

  1. Plan: does your account include Gemini in Meet? If not, the decision is about whether a plan upgrade is worth it for your team.
  2. Meeting type: routine status calls and planning sessions gain the most. One-to-one or sensitive talks often do not need notes.
  3. Language: do participants share one language, or would translated captions help everyone follow?
  4. Consent: will every participant be comfortable with notes? Tell guests in the invite.
  5. Review habit: who reads and corrects the notes before they go out?

Three hypothetical scenarios

  • A small business owner on Business Standard runs a weekly team call. Automatic notes for meetings with three or more people (the default on that plan, so the team is told) save the follow-up email, and Ask Gemini answers “who owns what” mid-call.
  • A retired teacher chairing a neighborhood group on a free account will not see these tools. A shared Google Doc and a volunteer note taker do the job well.
  • A project lead working with partners abroad turns on translated captions so each person reads in their own language, then checks the notes for names before sharing.

Next step

Start small. Turn on Take notes for me in your next routine team call, ask Gemini one specific question, and compare its summary with your own memory of the meeting. That habit of checking AI output is the core skill for any AI assistant, from Meet to Gmail. FAQ

Can I use Gemini in Google Meet on my phone?
Yes, for Ask Gemini. Google brought it to the Meet mobile app in February 2026, and you open it by tapping the Gemini icon during a call. Your plan and your admin settings still decide whether you see it.
Does Gemini record my meeting?
It does not make a video recording, but Take notes for me can save a written transcript of what people say. Get everyone’s agreement first, as local recording-consent rules may apply. Ask Gemini does not create a recording at all.
Will other people know I am using Gemini?
Notes and Ask Gemini show indicators and banners to everyone in the call. Your own Ask Gemini questions and answers stay private to you. If you use speech translation, others see that translation is in use.
Is Gemini in Meet the same as the Gemini app?
No. The Gemini app is a general chatbot on the web and phone. Gemini in Meet works inside the call and uses the meeting’s captions as context. Both can come with the same Workspace or Google AI plan.
