Anthropic has begun merging Claude chat and Cowork into one interface. The change is rolling out to Pro and Max users over the coming weeks, with Team, Free, and Enterprise following on different schedules.

The release, announced on September 16, 2026, also introduces Claude Docs and Claude Slides and brings Claude Design into regular conversations. All three are beta. They can create, edit, share, and export documents, presentations, and visual work, but important details, including PowerPoint editability and real-time collaboration, remain undocumented. We reviewed Anthropic’s announcement and help center but did not yet have access to test the rollout.

What is changing

Cowork launched as Claude’s separate space for longer, multi-step work: research, reports, spreadsheets, and tasks that run across connected files and tools. Claude Design followed in April 2026 as an Anthropic Labs research preview for visual work. Anthropic’s post says users found the split itself to be the friction: work started in one place did not carry into the other, and each task began with a decision about which tab it belonged in.

The new interface removes the need to choose chat or Cowork before starting. Claude can produce conversational answers or longer file-based deliverables from the same thread, with the same connectors, skills, and context available throughout. In practice you still say what you want, a document, a deck, or a plain answer; what disappears is the tab switch. Boris Cherny of Anthropic summarized it on X: ask for a presentation and you get one you can open, edit, and export, with no separate tool to navigate to. Our Cowork guide describes the workflow that previously required that switch.

Rollout by plan

PlanMerged interfaceDocs, Slides, Design in chat
Pro, MaxRolling out over the coming weeks on web, desktop, and mobileBeta, on by default; Design can be disabled under Settings, Capabilities
Team“Coming soon,” no dateBeta; Design on by default
EnterpriseWhen an admin enables it; at least 30 days’ notice before changesDesign off by default until an owner enables it under Organization settings
Free“Coming soon,” no dateNot included

Existing Cowork chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills remain accessible where they are, according to Anthropic. Fortune reports that Claude asks before taking actions by default, with the option to grant more autonomy, the same setting Cowork used.

Two clarifications. Claude Slides and Claude for PowerPoint are different products: the latter is an add-in that runs inside Microsoft’s app and is covered in our Claude for PowerPoint guide. And design systems for Claude Design are stored under Settings, Design systems, inherited at the organization level, and can be migrated from the legacy standalone product into artifacts that work across conversations, so they do not need to be re-uploaded each session.

Mobile

The merged interface is coming to the iOS and Android apps, but Claude Design has documented limits there.

Anthropic has not published an equivalent breakdown for Docs and Slides.

What is documented and what is not

QuestionOfficially documentedTested by usStill unknown
Do PowerPoint exports from Slides keep editable text boxes and native shapes? No mention in the announcement or help centerNoYes. Test on a throwaway deck before presenting from an export
Can several people edit a Claude Doc at the same time?Sharing and comments are confirmed; real-time co-editing is not describedNoYes
Is any of this available through the API or to third-party integrations? The release covers the Claude apps onlyNoYes, nothing announced
Can Claude Code read claude.ai conversations, or the reverse?Design handoff to Claude Code exists; conversation access is not announcedNoYes
Do usage limits change?Design counts toward the same limits as the rest of Claude; nothing specific on Docs or SlidesNoPartly

The first row matters most for anyone who will present from an exported file. A deck flattened to images cannot be fixed five minutes before a meeting.

Reception and context

Replies under the announcement split between users who had wanted the Design-to-Cowork handoff fixed and users who called the output unusable or the release a rename of existing features. That is a handful of posts, not a measure of sentiment. Fortune placed the move in an industry shift toward a single “superapp,” noting OpenAI’s plan to consolidate ChatGPT with its coding agent, and flagged one cost question: routing simple requests through more autonomous machinery can raise compute per query, citing a Stanford Digital Economy Lab estimate that agentic tasks consume far more tokens than plain chat. Anthropic has not said how usage limits will account for that.

What to do

  • Already on Cowork: nothing to migrate. Wait for the merged interface to reach your account.
  • Making decks or documents for others: try Docs and Slides on low-stakes material first, export once to Word or PowerPoint, and check what survives before relying on it for anything that must be edited later.
  • On Team or Free: no date has been given. Follow Anthropic’s blog rather than checking the app.
  • On Enterprise: ask your admin whether Design and the merged experience are enabled; both are off by default.

FAQ

Is Claude Slides the same as Claude for PowerPoint?
No. Claude Slides builds a presentation inside a Claude conversation and exports to PowerPoint or PDF. Claude for PowerPoint is an add-in that runs inside Microsoft PowerPoint and edits native slides there. Both are available on paid plans.
Do I have to move my design systems into the new Claude Design?
Anthropic’s help center says team design systems from the legacy standalone product can be migrated through a banner in Settings, Design systems. Migrated systems become artifacts usable across conversations and in Claude Code.
