The credentials in this guide fall into five groups:

  • IT certifications: CompTIA Security+, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Google IT Support.
  • Project management certifications: CAPM and PMP.
  • Healthcare support certifications: Phlebotomy, medical coding, pharmacy technician.
  • Business support certifications: aPHR, FPC, QuickBooks ProAdvisor, Microsoft Excel Associate.
  • AI certifications: Vendor certifications from Microsoft, AWS and Google; workplace AI certificates are discussed separately.

Many take 1–6 months and cost under $1,000. Pay depends on the job a credential gets you, not the certificate itself.

Below: 20 certifications with time, cost, exam and median pay for the roles they lead to.

Key terms used in this guide: AI literacy and machine learning.

This list includes certificates of completion, which document a learning program, and certifications, which usually require an assessment against an issuer’s standard.

These are grouped choices, rather than a salary ranking. Fees and requirements were checked on October 15, 2026. Prices are US dollars; exam fees exclude training, books, taxes, travel, and later maintenance unless specified.

Time means preparation only where the issuer publishes an estimate. “No fixed period” means the issuer sets no universal study timeline. Exam length appears separately in the same cell.

All wages are US occupation medians for May 2025, reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). They cover workers across experience levels, not credential holders or beginners. Four foundational cloud/AI credentials have no single defensible job-pay match.

IT certifications

Choose the task first: troubleshooting users’ computers, supporting networks, and securing systems involve different preparation. Cloud Practitioner establishes foundational cloud knowledge across roles.

AI certifications

For people in nontechnical roles who want to build and maintain practical AI skills, Coursiv can be a starting point. Its 28-Day AI Certificate Program offers short lessons and built-in practice that fit a busy schedule. Coursiv awards a certificate of completion, not an industry certification.

Of the five vendor certifications below, the first three cover foundations at different technical levels. The final two target experienced practitioners. BLS has no credential-holder salary for these exams; the two technical rows use related occupations only.

How to choose: ask four questions before you pay

Use these questions as a practical filter for certificate programs that pay well, starting with the job rather than the badge.

  1. Which field and task do you want? Choose a recognizable role, such as help desk technician or pharmacy technician. Save several current local postings and separate required credentials from preferred ones.
  2. Does the timeline fit your schedule? Include study and required training time, plus any clinical placements, application processing, and the wait for an available exam date.
  3. What is the full budget? Ask for exam, training, membership, books, proctoring, state requirements, retakes, and renewal costs that apply to your route.
  4. What does your local market request? Record the employer, posting date, duties, degree/experience rules, and credential wording. A preference in one advert establishes that employer’s position, not nationwide demand.

For example, a published Wellmark role lists CAPM/PMP among preferred qualifications alongside three-plus years of initiative-management experience.

In a 2025 episode of PayrollOrg’s PayTalk, Ryan Yannetta, then Deel’s director of US payroll, said he looks for certification when hiring payroll staff and encourages his team to earn FPC. Yannetta also led PayrollOrg’s Central Jersey chapter and helped write FPC exam questions.

Red flags: verify the issuer, assessment, and complete price

Use this six-point check before enrolling:

  1. Guaranteed jobs or salary: Ask for the exact claim and supporting evidence. Treat guaranteed outcomes as a reason to pause.
  2. Vague accreditation or partnerships: Identify the named body, exact program, and scope; a logo alone establishes little.
  3. An incomplete price: Check whether the quoted price includes required training, membership, books, and exam proctoring, and whether your qualification route adds other costs.
  4. Unclear entry requirements: Before paying for exam preparation, confirm that you meet the education, experience, and clinical training requirements, and check when you can take the exam.
  5. No way to verify the credential: Before enrolling, check how an employer could confirm with the awarding organization that you earned it.

The FTC’s Career Step case illustrates why employment-outcome and partnership claims deserve scrutiny; its 2024 action alleged deceptive advertising in those areas.

Use our online course certificate verification guide to check an issued record. Verification establishes issuance, not suitability for every job.

Quick certifications that pay well: assess your three-month starting point

When comparing short certificate programs that pay well, check how long each takes from your starting point. For 3-month certificate programs, confirm that you already meet the entry requirements. Google estimates three to six months for its IT Support certificate, so beginners should be prepared for a study plan that extends beyond three months.

For a shorter plan, compare these starting points:

  • Office work: Excel Associate targets defined spreadsheet skills. Compare Microsoft’s recommended practice profile with what you can already do before booking.
  • Project coordination: You can pursue CAPM without project experience, but you’ll need 23 hours of project management education before taking the exam. Your study plan should also include time to review and practise exam questions.
  • Bookkeeping software: If you already know QuickBooks, you may be ready to take the ProAdvisor certification exam directly. If you’re new to it, work through ProAdvisor Academy’s self-paced training and build any bookkeeping knowledge you’re missing.
  • Existing pharmacy work: CPhT’s 500-hour work route may suit someone already in a qualifying technician role. It does not remove the work requirement for a newcomer.

An experienced developer’s report on Reddit describes roughly two months preparing for AWS’s professional generative-AI exam; that person already had backend, cloud-migration, and prior AWS certification experience. Their timeline illustrates why starting knowledge matters.

Certifications without a degree or experience

CompTIA exams have no formal education, training, or prior-certification prerequisites. Google IT Support accepts beginners without a degree; CAPM accepts secondary education plus its required training. PMP also has a high-school route, with five years managing projects.

Healthcare eligibility is more practical. ASCP’s PBT routes require qualifying training or experience; AMT’s RMA education route includes an externship. Confirm placement access before paying for study materials.

Employer requirements can exceed exam requirements. Victra’s October 14, 2026 AI Engineer I job posting names AI-901 as a plus while requiring a bachelor’s, coding aptitude, and API/data knowledge. Likewise, BLS says HR specialists typically need a bachelor’s even though aPHR requires no HR experience.

If you’re considering an AI role without a degree or relevant experience, our guide to whether you need a certificate to get an AI job explains how projects and practical skills fit alongside a credential.

AI certifications: match the credential to the work

Here is a more detailed overview of AI certifications mentioned above.

There is no single AI certification salary. An introductory knowledge exam, an experienced developer’s certification, and a workplace course certificate document different achievements.

For broad business knowledge, compare AWS AI Practitioner and Google Cloud Generative AI Leader.

If you are following older study advice for Microsoft’s AI-900 exam, make sure that you check the requirements for the current AI-901 exam, which requires familiarity with Python and Azure. The Microsoft AI certification guide offers a study-plan framework; adapt it to current AI-901 requirements.

Google Cloud’s ML Engineer and AWS’s professional generative-AI exam target deeper technical preparation. Their related BLS occupation medians describe data scientists and software developers across many backgrounds. For a way to connect exam objectives with a sandbox project, read the AWS machine learning certification preparation guide.

Get more value from your non-AI certification with practical AI skills

To get more value from your non-AI certification budget, pair your subject knowledge with AI skills you can apply in the same field. You can learn and practise these skills without paying for an AI certification exam. Focus on producing a useful result and explaining how you checked it.

For guided practice alongside your non-AI credential, Coursiv’s AI Certificate Program offers short lessons that fit a busy schedule and built-in practice. Complete the coursework and pass its final assessment to earn a certificate of completion.

The following examples use fictional material to show how the two skill sets work together.

CAPM or PMP plus AI project reporting: Ask an AI assistant to turn a fictional meeting note into a draft status report with owners, deadlines, and unanswered questions. Apply your project management knowledge to check whether the report captures the agreed actions, responsibilities, and dates. Keep project decisions with the manager. The AI project management certification guide explains ways to combine project management with AI.

Medical coding plus AI documentation review: Ask AI to flag missing information in a wholly fictional clinical note. Use your coding knowledge and relevant guidelines to check its suggestions and identify gaps it missed; ask an experienced coder about points you’re unsure of. Do not assign billable codes or use patient records. Rana Abuzir, AHIMA’s director of health information practice advancement, explains that technology-generated documentation queries still need professional standards and provider judgment.

Bookkeeping plus AI in spreadsheets: Use fictional transactions and ask AI to draft a reconciliation worksheet or explain a formula. Apply bookkeeping knowledge to check the formulas, totals, and transaction classifications, with an experienced bookkeeper reviewing your work. This gives you a practical example of how you combine accounting software knowledge with AI-assisted spreadsheet work.

Build a simple AI portfolio of practical use cases and small AI projects in your field; a document or folder is enough. For each entry, describe the task and AI tool, then include the original input, corrected output, and an explanation of what you changed and why. These examples show how you apply subject knowledge to check and improve AI-assisted work.

If you choose an app-based course to build these skills, read our guide to app-based AI certificate credibility to check what learners practise, how they are assessed, and what the certificate represents.

FAQ

What is the easiest certification to get that pays well?
When comparing easy certifications that pay well, start with skills you already have. If you already use spreadsheets, Excel Associate may be easier for you to pick up. aPHR is an entry-level HR certification that doesn’t require any prior HR experience. Find local job postings that need these skills or credentials and pay what you want.
Which certification has the highest salary?
When comparing the highest paying certifications, check the related job and its entry requirements. Software developers have the highest occupation median in this table: $135,980 in May 2025, shown alongside AWS’s Generative AI Developer – Professional certification. That figure covers the wider occupation across experience levels. For a broader role comparison, see the highest paying AI jobs guide.
What quick certifications pay well?
Excel Associate, CAPM, and QuickBooks ProAdvisor can fit a shorter study plan if you already have relevant knowledge. CAPM requires 23 education hours plus any additional preparation you need; QuickBooks training and certification are free through ProAdvisor Academy with an Intuit Accountant Suite account and program enrollment. CPhT may suit existing pharmacy technicians who already meet its training or work requirements. Allow time for preparation, applications, and exam availability when judging how quickly you can qualify.
Are AI certifications worth it?
An AI certification can be useful when its subject and technical level match your work or a target employer’s requirements. For everyday AI use in a nontechnical role, a practical course with a certificate of completion may be a useful starting point. You can also combine AI skills with a non-AI credential without taking an AI certification exam.
How much can you earn with an AI certification?
There is no single AI certification salary. The data-scientist and software-developer figures in the table are occupation medians covering workers with different backgrounds and experience levels. What can I learn in three months to get a job?

Use a three-month plan to focus on spreadsheet skills, project management fundamentals, or AI tasks relevant to work you already know. Compare your progress with current job requirements and save practical examples you can explain. Google estimates three to six months for its IT Support certificate, so that full program may take longer. Hiring also depends on the employer’s education and experience requirements.

If a longer study plan suits your goals, use the data analytics bootcamp decision guide to compare practice, feedback, and cost.

What certifications can I get without a degree?
CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ do not require a college degree; Google’s IT Support certificate also accepts beginners without one. CAPM requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 23 hours of project management education. PMP has a high-school route, with five years of project management experience. Employers may still require a degree or relevant experience for the job.
